Zaʾ Ashwraʾ Baldahyh Aljnwbyh

Within the southern suburbs of Beirut, in the district of Baabda in the Mount Lebanon governorate, the Azaa Ashura hall serves as a place of annual remembrance for the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, may God be pleased with him, at Karbala on the tenth of Muharram in the year 61 of the Hijri. The name Azaa signifies a gathering of mourning and consolation, and Ashura marks the tenth day of the month when the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, fell alongside seventy two of his noble companions and relatives on the Euphrates plain.

Lebanon's relationship with the family of the Prophet reaches back to the earliest centuries of Islam. The southern villages of Jabal Amil became homes to students of the noble household, producing scholars who travelled to Najaf and Qom for advanced study before returning to teach. Baabda itself, sitting just above the Beirut River, grew through the Ottoman centuries as a mixed community of Druze, Christian, and Muslim families, and the Dahiyeh neighbourhoods further south expanded through the twentieth century into one of the largest residential zones of the capital.

The hall itself is simple and dignified. A wide carpeted space accommodates hundreds of worshippers during the first ten nights of Muharram, when elegies are recited in Arabic and sometimes in Persian, while black banners bearing the names of Husayn, Abbas, and the children of the household hang from the walls. Between Muharram gatherings the space hosts daily prayers, Qur'an study circles, and charitable distributions of food to widows and orphans, following the instruction of the Prophet, who declared that the best house is one in which an orphan is honoured.

Travellers touched by the memory of Karbala are warmly invited to enter, to sit among the mourners on ten softly lit evenings of the new lunar year, and to whisper the salam upon Husayn, upon his brother Abbas, and upon every pure soul who stood with them on the blazing sands of that far off desert afternoon so long ago.
