Hakkında

Perched on the pine clad hills overlooking Beirut, in the historic caza of Baabda where the Lebanese presidential palace also stands, Al Azhar Mosque offers a place of refuge from the restless traffic of the capital and a point of spiritual gravity for families living in Yarze, Hadath and the surrounding villages. Its name pays tribute to the venerable mosque and seat of learning founded in Fatimid Cairo more than a thousand years ago, and locals often speak of the Baabda mosque with a similar reverence, seeing it as a small echo of that great tradition of knowledge and worship planted in Lebanese soil.

The architecture reflects the layered heritage of the region. A pale stone facade, characteristic of Mount Lebanon masonry, gives way to a central dome crowned with a slender crescent and flanked by minarets whose slim, pencil like profile has become a familiar silhouette against the evening sky. The call to prayer, carried on the breeze from the cedar clad slopes, travels over orchards of olive, fig and lemon trees that surround the neighbourhood.

Inside, the prayer hall breathes with cool air even in the height of summer. Mashrabiya screens filter the light into soft geometric patterns across the carpet, and verses from the Holy Quran in Kufic script run in elegant bands along the upper walls. The mihrab is lined with coloured marble in muted greens and creams, while the minbar is carved from walnut in a style that recalls the great mosques of Damascus. Worshippers gather here for the five daily prayers, and on Fridays the hall fills well before the adhan, with latecomers unrolling mats on the outer terrace.

Community life revolves around the mosque throughout the year. Quran memorisation circles for children, Arabic lessons for newcomers and lectures on the seerah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, keep the lights burning well into the evening. In Ramadan, volunteers distribute iftar meals to Syrian refugee families and Lebanese in need, honouring the example of companions like Umar ibn al Khattab, may God be pleased with him, whose generosity is often recalled from the minbar. Visitors of any background are received warmly, asked only to dress modestly and to move quietly through the hall during prayer.
