Hakkında

Sultan Ahmet Moskee in Zaandam takes its name from one of the most celebrated mosques in the entire Islamic world, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul, universally known to travellers and art historians as the Blue Mosque for the luminous azure Iznik tiles that line its interior. Commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I and completed in 1616, the Istanbul mosque faces the Hagia Sophia across a grand public square and stands as a masterpiece of late classical Ottoman architecture, with six minarets, a cascade of semi domes, and an unforgettable central dome painted with intricate calligraphy and floral designs. Naming a mosque in the Dutch town of Zaandam after this majestic original is a gesture of aspiration and connection, linking Turkish Dutch worshippers to the architectural, scholarly, and spiritual heritage of the Ottoman Islamic tradition. The Zaandam mosque itself is much more modest in form, housed in an adapted urban building in keeping with the practical circumstances of Muslim community life in the Netherlands, though interior decoration often includes Ottoman calligraphy and carpets drawing on Turkish aesthetic heritage. The prayer hall is carpeted, oriented toward the qibla, furnished with a mihrab, mimbar, and women's section, with ablution facilities adjoining. Community programmes serve the Turkish and broader Muslim population of Zaandam with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an classes, Turkish language schooling for children, Dutch integration support, marriage and funeral services, and welfare initiatives. Ramadan sees nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars featuring Turkish specialties, and itikaf during the final ten nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in the traditional Turkish manner with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitations, adding a layer of Ottoman devotional richness to the mosque's quiet Dutch setting. Sultan Ahmet Moskee regularly hosts lectures and multimedia presentations on the architectural and spiritual heritage of the great Ottoman mosques, featuring images and detailed discussions of the Süleymaniye, the Selimiye in Edirne, and the Blue Mosque itself, connecting Zaandam's Turkish community with the rich aesthetic and religious heritage of their ancestral homeland and inspiring appreciation for the artistic achievements of classical Islamic civilisation.
