Hakkında
Stichting Moskee Al Himmah, registered under the Dutch legal form of a stichting or foundation, serves as a mosque and Islamic centre in Zaandam whose name in Arabic means high resolve or lofty aspiration, a quality deeply prized in Islamic spiritual tradition. The concept of himmah appears often in works of tasawwuf and classical ethics, referring to the spiritual ambition that drives a believer beyond mediocrity toward the highest stations of worship, knowledge, and service to Allah. Naming a mosque Al Himmah therefore invites its congregation to pursue excellence in their faith and in their lives more broadly. The mosque serves a mixed community of Moroccan, Arab, and other Muslim worshippers in Zaandam, the town northwest of Amsterdam whose historic windmills and industrial heritage form the backdrop to the contemporary multicultural community that has made it home. Housed in an adapted urban building, the mosque features a prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla with a mihrab, mimbar, and women's section, along with ablution facilities and classroom space for educational programmes. The mosque committee, organised as a Dutch stichting to meet legal requirements for religious institutions in the Netherlands, manages daily operations with transparency and accountability. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah, Qur'an recitation classes, Arabic language lessons, tajwid training, fiqh and tafsir study, Dutch language and integration support for newer immigrants, marriage and funeral services, and zakat collection and distribution. Ramadan brings the mosque to its fullest devotional expression with nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. The mosque's name keeps before its congregation the call of himmah, reminding worshippers each time they enter that the highest aspirations of the soul should animate every act of worship and every moment of daily life. The name Al Himmah is often invoked by the imam during khutbahs and lectures as a call to rise above the mediocre and the minimal in matters of faith, encouraging worshippers to set their sights on the highest stations of worship described in the Qur'an and hadith, and to refuse the quiet spiritual laziness that threatens believers in every age and every society but particularly in comfortable Western environments where the pressures of faith are subtle rather than obvious.
