Moskee Al-Ihsane

Moskee Al Ihsane in Zaandam takes its name from ihsan, the station of spiritual excellence defined by the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam in the famous hadith of Jibreel where the archangel asked about the three levels of religion, islam, iman, and ihsan. Ihsan, he explained, is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and knowing that though you do not see Him, He sees you. This definition has been the subject of centuries of commentary by scholars of the heart such as Imam Al Ghazali and Imam An Nawawi, who have taught that the pursuit of ihsan is the summit of the believer's spiritual journey. Naming a mosque Al Ihsane invites its congregation to this highest aspiration each time they enter its doors. The mosque serves the Moroccan and broader Muslim community of Zaandam, occupying an adapted building within the urban fabric of this Dutch town. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, illuminated by soft overhead lighting that creates a contemplative atmosphere conducive to devotional concentration.
