IGMG Osmanlı Moskee in Zaandam is operated under the auspices of the Islamische Gemeinschaft Milli Görüş and takes its name from the Ottoman Empire, Osmanlı in Turkish, recalling the six century imperial dynasty founded by Osman Gazi in the late thirteenth century which ruled over much of the Islamic world from Hungary to the Arabian Peninsula until its dissolution in 1924. For Turkish Muslims the Ottoman heritage is a source of pride and identity, representing centuries of Islamic scholarship, architectural achievement, military power, and cultural flourishing. Naming a mosque Osmanlı in the Dutch town of Zaandam honours this heritage and reminds worshippers that their faith is rooted in a long and noble tradition that continues to shape their communal life in the Netherlands. The mosque serves the Turkish Dutch community of Zaandam and surrounding municipalities with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, and full community services. Inside an adapted urban building, the prayer hall is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, adorned with calligraphy in classical Ottoman style naming Allah, Muhammad, and the four rightly guided caliphs, with a mihrab, mimbar, and women's section ensuring proper accommodation for all worshippers. Educational programmes include Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, Turkish language schooling that preserves heritage among second and third generation immigrants, Dutch integration support, fiqh and seerah lessons, and welfare services. Ramadan sees nightly tarawih prayers that often last late into the evening, community iftars featuring Turkish specialties like çorba, pide, and baklava, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is commemorated in the Turkish manner with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitation, and Kandil nights honouring key dates in the Islamic calendar are observed with special gatherings of prayer and reflection. Special programmes at IGMG Osmanlı Moskee commemorate the Ottoman heritage on dates marking the conquest of Constantinople, the birth and death anniversaries of major Ottoman sultans who patronised Islamic scholarship and mosque architecture, and the contributions of Ottoman era scholars to jurisprudence, theology, and Sufism, offering Turkish Dutch Muslims a deeper appreciation for the civilisational legacy that their community carries forward in the contemporary Netherlands.
