Essalam Moskee in Zaandam, whose name draws from As Salam, the Peace, one of the most beautiful names of Allah and from the Islamic greeting of peace that believers exchange when they meet, serves as a house of worship and community gathering for Muslims in the Zaanstad area just northwest of Amsterdam. The name signals the core message the mosque seeks to embody, that Islam is a religion of peace whose followers greet one another with salutations of peace, whose prayers conclude with turning to left and right offering peace, and whose ultimate destination, the paradise of Dar as Salam, the Abode of Peace, bears this same name. The mosque serves a congregation of Moroccan, Turkish, and other Muslim worshippers in Zaandam, historically a town of shipbuilders, paint makers, and food processors whose population now includes a diverse immigrant community. The building is an adapted urban structure fitting the Dutch streetscape, with a prayer hall inside laid in carpets toward the qibla, a mihrab, a mimbar, and a women's section. Ablution facilities serve the daily worshippers, and a small library holds texts in Arabic, Dutch, and the languages of its congregation. Programmes include daily prayers, Friday Jumuah, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, fiqh and tafsir lessons, Dutch language support for new immigrants, marriage solemnisation, janazah services, zakat distribution, and welfare for families in need. Ramadan transforms the mosque into a centre of nightly worship with tarawih prayers, community iftars breaking the fast together with dates, soup, and shared dishes, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha bring festive gatherings to the mosque with families celebrating the completion of fasting or the commemoration of Ibrahim's sacrifice alayhis salam. Community members at Essalam Moskee take active roles in Dutch interfaith councils and local government consultations, representing Muslim perspectives in discussions of religious diversity, educational accommodation, and community welfare, reflecting the mosque's conviction that good Muslim citizenship in the Netherlands requires engagement with broader Dutch civic life rather than retreat into isolated enclaves, an approach grounded in the Prophet's example of gentle and constructive engagement with his wider society.
