Hakkında
Crowning the historic Algerian city of Tlemcen near the Moroccan border, Mosquee Sidi Boumediene honours one of the greatest saints of the Muslim west, Abu Madyan Shu'ayb ibn al Husayn al Ansari al Andalusi (may God have mercy on him), who was born near Seville around 1126, spent years of study and spiritual formation in Fez and Bijaya, and settled in Tlemcen where he lived, taught, and was buried in 1197. His tomb and the adjoining mosque complex have drawn pilgrims, seekers, and scholars for more than eight centuries, and the surrounding quarter of El Eubbad remains one of the most beautiful and revered religious sites of the entire Maghreb.
Tlemcen itself is one of the great cities of Islamic North Africa, serving as the capital of the Zayyanid dynasty from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries and hosting a remarkable network of mosques, madrasas, and palaces whose refined architectural style rivalled the greatest Andalusian monuments of the same period. Abu Madyan's influence on North African and West African religious life is impossible to exaggerate. His students carried his teachings across the Maghreb, into Andalusia, and deep into West Africa, shaping generations of pious teachers, poets, and communities whose spiritual life still reflects his gentle emphasis on sincerity, humility, and the remembrance of God.
Architecturally the complex is a masterpiece of Marinid era religious architecture. Carved plaster walls, honeycomb muqarnas ceilings, cedar wood doors with intricate geometric inlay, a minaret decorated with glazed tile mosaic, and a tranquil courtyard with a central fountain shape the visitor's experience. The adjoining madrasa, funded by the Marinid sultan Abu al Hasan in the fourteenth century, served for centuries as one of the most important centres of learning in the western Muslim world. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that whoever sets out seeking knowledge is on the path of God until he returns. Friday prayers draw worshippers from across the city, and during Ramadan the courtyard fills with collective iftars of harira, dates, and sweet zlabia. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Sidi Boumediene appear on this page for every resident and visitor of Tlemcen.
