Hakkında
Located within the Mersin Tarsus Organize Sanayi Bolgesi on the fertile plain between the Taurus mountains and the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, this mosque serves the industrial workers, engineers, and transport drivers who keep the busy factories of the OSB running around the clock. Tarsus itself is one of the most storied cities of the eastern Mediterranean, mentioned in ancient sources as the birthplace of Saint Paul and as a centre of Stoic philosophy, while Islamic tradition honours it as the home of the seven sleepers of the cave, whose shrine draws visitors to the Eshab i Kehf area a short drive from the city. The surrounding Cukurova plain is a rich agricultural and industrial zone producing cotton, citrus, wheat, and increasingly sophisticated manufactured goods. Architecturally the OSB mosque reflects modern Turkish civic design with classical Ottoman accents, featuring a central dome resting on an octagonal drum, twin pencil minarets rising beside the main gate, a shaded portico with granite columns, and a paved courtyard generous enough for Friday overflow crowds. Inside, the mihrab and minbar are carved in cream marble, and the carpet is a rich green patterned with repeating mihrab arches beneath soft lighting. Daily prayers bring labourers changing shifts, engineers from the technical offices, and drivers whose lorries cross between Iskenderun and central Anatolia. The Friday khutbah, in Turkish, often addresses the dignity of honest labour, the duty of providing for one's family, and gratitude for the provision God bestows. Ramadan brings communal iftars organised by the OSB administration, featuring lentil soup, pide bread, kebabs, kunefe, and sweet cay from large samovars. Taraweeh is led by a local hafiz. The two Eids fill the courtyard with worker families. Travellers can combine their stop with the Cleopatra Gate, the Roman road ruins, the Tarsus waterfall, and the venerable Eshab i Kehf cave site nearby across the olive hills. A reading room holds works on Turkish industrial history, Islamic jurisprudence, and the classical Ottoman poetry of Yunus Emre and Mevlana. Women's halaqah sessions meet weekly in a shaded side hall, and a Quranic memorisation programme serves workers' children attending the nearby schools. The imam provides counselling on family matters, workplace disputes, and the spiritual questions that arise among those far from their home villages. Charitable programmes distribute food parcels during Ramadan and winter months to vulnerable workers and their families across this busy industrial zone of southern Anatolia and its agricultural hinterland.
