Hakkında
Located in the Egemen Mahallesi of Tarsus, the ancient city of Cilicia in Turkey's Mersin province, the Şehit Serdar Koyuncu Camii honours a young Turkish martyr, a şehit remembered by his community and by his family whose endowment contributed to the mosque's construction. Tarsus holds an extraordinary place in world history, mentioned in sacred texts of several traditions, associated with the early caliph Umar ibn Abd al Aziz, may God be pleased with him, whose tomb lies within the city, and home to centuries of scholars, mystics, and generals who shaped the religious life of Anatolia. Mersin province, stretching along the eastern Mediterranean shore with the Taurus mountains rising behind, carries a layered heritage of Arab, Turkmen, and later Ottoman settlement, and its contemporary mosques reflect both classical Ottoman style and modern Turkish construction. The Şehit Serdar Koyuncu Camii follows a dignified contemporary Turkish idiom, with a central octagonal dome clad in lead grey, two slender pencil minarets, an external portico with arched arcades, and walls of dressed stone complemented by calligraphic inscriptions above the main entrance. Inside, the prayer hall is covered with deep red Bursa style carpets, the mihrab and minbar are finished in carved Kütahya tile with inscriptions from Surah al Kahf, and a large central chandelier illuminates the interior. Daily prayers draw a steady congregation of neighbourhood residents, civil servants, and university students, and Jumu'ah gathers a larger crowd whose overflow extends into the courtyard. The khutbah, delivered in Turkish as directed by the Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı, often touches on civic virtue, family ethics, and gratitude for the blessings of faith and homeland. Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, iftars of iskender, pide, and baklava, and a Qur'an completion ceremony on the night of power. Eid prayers are warmly attended, and children receive candies afterwards. Respectful dress, covered heads for women, and quiet conduct remain the expected etiquette on entry. A small garden near the rear of the mosque, planted with olive trees, cypresses, and citrus, is tended by volunteers from the local neighbourhood, and the imam sometimes delivers a brief lesson on Surah Yaseen in Turkish every Thursday evening for those wishing to strengthen their memorisation, with children welcome to attend accompanied by a parent or older sibling.
