Grande Mosquee De Taounate Aljam Alkbyr Tawnat

High in the forested foothills of the Rif mountains, within the small northern Moroccan town of Taounate, the Grand Mosque of Taounate al Jami al Kabir serves as the principal congregational mosque for a community set amid olive terraces, pine forests, and limestone ridges. Taounate sits within the ancient Jbala region, whose Arabised Berber villages have long maintained a distinctive culture of white painted homes, red striped woollen weavings, and cherished musical traditions such as the taqtuqa jabaliya sung at weddings.

The town's history combines Idrisid foundations with Merinid era development, and its location along the old inland route linking Fez to the Rif coastal towns of Al Hoceima and Chefchaouen has made it a quiet crossroads of trade and scholarship. The Grand Mosque continues that civic role in the modern town, anchoring the weekly Jumu'ah, Eid celebrations, and daily prayers for families across the surrounding valleys.

The building follows a familiar northern Moroccan idiom. Whitewashed walls, a green glazed tile roof, and a square plan Maghribi minaret topped by a small merlon lantern frame the exterior. Horseshoe arches carry the entrance portico, and zellij mosaic in emerald and cobalt tile borders the main doorway. A paved courtyard of pale limestone welcomes worshippers through a carved cedar door inlaid with brass studs, and a central fountain in the forecourt provides water for ablution.

Inside, the hall is bright and airy. Horseshoe arches on slender painted columns rise to a carved cedar ceiling bearing geometric medallions, and Berber weave carpets in red and green line the floor. A mihrab finished in white plaster is flanked by slender columns and bordered with mosaic tile in eight pointed stars. A carved cedar mimbar with delicately worked panels stands beside it. A small women's prayer area behind a patterned mashrabiya screen opens onto a side entrance with its own ablution space.

Friday gatherings bring farmers, teachers, and traders together from the surrounding Jbala villages. Ramadan nights in Taounate fill the courtyard with the scent of harira, honeyed sellou sweetness, and fresh loaves from the nearby wood ovens, weaving neighbourhood life through the warm lamplight of the mosque.
