Hakkında

Established as a dedicated centre for the memorisation and study of the Qur'an, Markaz Bir al Turki li Tahfeez al Quran serves the community of Tagiura within the Tripoli region of north western Libya, carrying forward one of the oldest educational traditions of the Muslim world. The locality takes its name from an ancient water well associated with a Turkish notable of the Ottoman era, a reminder of the centuries during which Libya was administered from Istanbul and its coastal cities played host to a cosmopolitan mix of Andalusians, Turks, Berbers and Arabs. Tagiura itself lies just east of Tripoli and has been a fishing and agricultural settlement since Phoenician times, its date palms and olive groves providing the mainstay of life before oil transformed the country. The memorisation centre occupies a mosque compound whose main prayer hall is supplemented by classrooms, a small library and a walled courtyard where students gather for recitation circles. The architecture is unmistakably Libyan, presenting plain whitewashed walls, wooden rafters painted in subtle red and green, and arched windows filled with coloured glass that scatter jewelled patterns across the reed mats at noon. A single dome and a short square minaret rise above the compound, and the entrance is framed by a pointed horseshoe arch. Inside, students from age six upward sit cross legged before their wooden rihal book rests, reciting portions of the Qur'an in rotation under the gentle correction of their teachers. The centre holds annual competitions in which outstanding memorisers are recognised with prizes of Qur'ans, watches and small sums of money, following a Libyan custom encouraging diligence in the sacred discipline. Friday prayers are well attended, the sermon often drawing on the verses the students have memorised that week. During Ramadan the centre completes a full recitation of the Qur'an in tarawih prayer and distributes light iftar meals to fasting families. The centre also cares for orphans through a small sponsorship programme that pays school fees and provides monthly food baskets, reflecting the care that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, showed to the orphan. Visitors arriving from central Tripoli can reach Tagiura by shared taxi, entering modestly and keeping their voices low out of respect for the students at study.
