Hakkında
In the small town of Schwerte, just outside Dortmund in Germany's Ruhr region, the Marokkanisch-Islamische Begegnungsstätte — the Moroccan-Islamic Encounter Centre — serves the Moroccan Muslim community of the area. Moroccan migration to Germany is smaller than Turkish migration but has a long history, beginning with the guest worker era and continuing into present-day professional and student arrivals. A centre like this one gives a specific cultural and linguistic home to Moroccan Muslims who might otherwise feel lost among the larger Turkish-majority mosques of the region. Services are conducted in Arabic, with khutbahs and study circles often delivered in a dialect and style familiar to those raised in Morocco. The mosque follows the Maliki tradition that dominates Morocco, and members who grew up attending Friday prayer in Fez, Casablanca, or Rabat find a continuity here that is precious to them. Daily prayers are held, and the Friday gathering brings out the majority of the community, including those who travel from surrounding towns because Schwerte is the closest Moroccan-centred mosque. The centre also functions as a cultural hub — it hosts Moroccan cooking gatherings, tea afternoons, a small weekend school where children learn Moroccan Arabic alongside Qur'an, and occasional events marking the religious calendar as it is observed in North Africa. Ramadan here follows the Moroccan rhythm: harira soup for iftar, chebakia sweets, tajines shared between families, and taraweeh prayed in the melodic Warsh qira'ah that differs subtly from the Hafs more common in other parts of the Muslim world. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم encouraged the believers to maintain their ties of kinship and community, and for the Moroccans of Schwerte and the surrounding Ruhr towns, this centre is one of the primary ways those ties are kept alive across the distance from their homeland. The building is modest, the doors are open, and the welcome is warm to anyone who steps in. On major Moroccan religious days the smell of freshly baked msemen drifts from the kitchen through the whole building, drawing even the quietest members out of their books and into the communal space where these meals are shared.
