Hakkında

Serving as the central khanaqah masjid of Banshkhali in the Chittagong district of Bangladesh, Banskhali Kendrio Khanaka e Hamedia preserves a distinctive tradition of Bengali Islamic spiritual life centred on the khanaqah institution. The term khanaqah originates in Persian and refers to a gathering place for spiritual aspirants, a hostel and teaching centre where masters and disciples engaged in sustained practices of remembrance, recitation, and instruction. The suffix Hamedia indicates an affiliation with a spiritual lineage bearing the name Hamed, a tradition that has flourished across the Bengal delta since the arrival of preachers and teachers whose shrines still dot the region. Chittagong itself is Bangladesh's bustling port city and its hinterland, a region whose Islamic heritage stretches back to the arrival of Arab, Persian, and Turkic merchants in the medieval period, and whose rural masajid and mazars continue to draw pilgrims across the monsoon seasons. Banshkhali lies to the south along the Bay of Bengal coast, its rice fields and coconut groves interrupted by small market towns where religious life remains vibrant. The Kendrio Khanaka e Hamedia masjid serves both as a place of congregational prayer and as the seat of the local khanaqah tradition, hosting dhikr gatherings, recitations of mawlid verses praising the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and teaching sessions for students of the esoteric sciences. Architecturally the structure reflects Bengali vernacular traditions, tin roofs sloped steeply against the monsoon rains, brick walling in soft ochre render, a modest dome and minaret rising above the prayer hall, and a wide verandah where worshippers can rest and converse. Inside, palm fibre mats cover the floor, calligraphic panels adorn the walls, and the mimbar is shaped from carved native hardwood. Daily prayers, Jumu'ah, and extensive Ramadan programmes fill the calendar. Eid processions wind through the nearby villages. Visitors exploring Chittagong's port, the Shrine of Bayazid Bostami, or the hill tracts further east will find Banshkhali a window onto the rhythms of rural Bangladeshi Islamic life centred on the khanaqah tradition. The masjid remains a meaningful institution in the spiritual geography of southern Chittagong, its ongoing activities sustaining the unbroken transmission of classical Bengali Islamic devotional practices to new generations whose engagement with the khanaqah tradition will carry these precious inheritances forward into the coming decades of regional Muslim life.
