Hakkında

Along a quiet street in the Catalan town of Sant Joan Despi, just south west of Barcelona, the Comunidad Islamica de Sant Joan Despi serves a growing community of Muslims drawn from Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, Bangladesh and the wider Muslim world. Catalonia itself has a rich but complex Islamic history, having been part of the Umayyad state of al Andalus during the eighth century before returning to Christian rule during the early Reconquista. Today the region is home to a thriving contemporary Muslim population shaped by migration from the late twentieth century onwards, and community centres such as this one play a key role in sustaining religious, educational and social life for local families.

Sant Joan Despi itself grew rapidly in the twentieth century from an agricultural town into a residential suburb of Barcelona's metropolitan region, attracting workers from across Spain and later from abroad. The mosque occupies a converted ground floor commercial space in a residential building, an arrangement typical of many Spanish Muslim communities that have gradually outgrown initial prayer rooms and begun to plan purpose built mosques in the future. The entrance is marked by a discreet sign in Arabic and Catalan, and a small waiting area inside leads to separate prayer halls for men and women.

The main prayer hall is a rectangular room carpeted in deep green with simple geometric mihrab markers pointing toward Mecca. The mihrab itself is a modest niche finished in white tile with a calligraphic phrase from the Quran. A small wooden minbar stands beside it, used for the brief weekly exhortation when Friday prayer is held. Ceiling lights and gentle ventilation keep the interior comfortable through the Mediterranean summer. A small adjoining room functions as a classroom for children's Arabic and Quran lessons on weekends.

The congregation gathers for the five daily prayers, with the largest attendance at maghrib and isha when workers have finished their shifts. Friday jumu'ah fills the hall beyond capacity and extends into the entrance corridor, with the khutba delivered in Arabic and summarised in Spanish and Catalan for the benefit of younger members and local visitors. The community also organises interfaith dialogue sessions with neighbouring Catholic parishes, weekly Arabic language classes for both Muslim and curious non Muslim residents, and a Ramadan iftar programme that draws a warm gathering of neighbours each evening during the holy month. Travellers passing through the Barcelona metropolitan area are welcomed sincerely and invited to share a glass of sweet Moroccan mint tea and a few words of Catalan conversation before resuming their journey.
