Hakkında
Commemorating the charitable partnership of Abdul Muhsin al Ulayyan and his wife al Jawharah al Salih, may God have mercy on them, this Riyadh mosque in Ar Riyad province preserves a familiar Saudi tradition in which a husband and wife together endow a place of prayer and learning for their community. Riyadh's twentieth and twenty first century expansion has been accompanied by the construction of thousands of neighbourhood mosques, many of them built through the private generosity of families whose names remain associated with the buildings long after their own lives have ended, and such endowments are regarded within the Arabian tradition as a lasting act of charity whose reward continues after death. The al Ulayyan family, an established Najdi lineage, built this mosque to serve their district with reliable daily prayers, Qur'an classes, and community programmes. Najdi architecture, rooted in the thick walled mud brick compounds of old Riyadh and Diriyah, has evolved into a contemporary Saudi style that preserves its austerity while adopting modern construction techniques. The mosque follows this restrained idiom, with a central dome clad in cream tile, a single square minaret clad in pale stone, walls of dressed limestone with carved panels, and a sheltered portico opening onto a courtyard with a marble fountain for wudu. Inside, the prayer hall is covered with deep blue carpets, the mihrab is finished in carved plaster bearing verses from Surah al Fatihah and Surah al Ikhlas, and a cedar minbar stands to one side. A women's section accessed by a side entrance accommodates sisters for prayer and lessons. Daily prayers gather residents and civil servants, Jumu'ah brings a substantial congregation, and the khutbah is delivered in classical Arabic on themes of tawhid, family ethics, and charity. Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, communal iftars of dates, laban, jareesh, mandi, and Arabic coffee, and Qur'an completion ceremonies during the last ten nights. Eid prayers fill the surrounding streets. Visitors should dress modestly, cover their heads if women, and observe the quiet decorum expected within Saudi mosques throughout the day. A small annual commemoration of the endowing couple is held on the anniversary of their passing, during which their children and grandchildren visit the mosque, lead the evening prayer, and distribute dates and Arabic coffee to worshippers, while their names are remembered in the supplications of the imam, a familiar custom in Najdi religious life that celebrates the enduring benefit of lasting charitable works.
