Hakkında
Along one of the wide residential boulevards of northern Riyadh, Jami al Shaykh Abd al Rahman ibn Abd al Aziz Abanumi, may God have mercy on him, carries the memory of a respected Najdi scholar and benefactor who built the mosque as a perpetual waqf for the surrounding quarter. The Abanumi family belongs to the old Najdi merchant lineages of Riyadh, and their endowments of schools, wells, and mosques have long been a familiar thread in the civic fabric of the city. Naming a mosque after its founder is a common honour in Saudi waqf tradition, inviting worshippers to recall the benefactor in their personal prayers whenever they enter.
Riyadh itself, once the walled Najdi oasis of the Al Saud, has transformed within a few generations into one of the great modern capitals of the Arab world, its skyline threaded with glass towers and its suburbs laid out in wide grids shaded by ghaf and neem trees. Contemporary Riyadh mosque design has developed a distinctive idiom, blending the restrained Najdi vocabulary of crenellated parapets and pale limestone with the generous scale of modern air conditioned congregations.
The Abanumi mosque follows this idiom with calm confidence. A sand toned limestone façade rises to crenellated parapets inspired by the old towers of Diriyah, and small pointed wooden window frames in pale turquoise soften the façade. A single minaret in square plan carries a stepped crown at its summit, and a broad shaded portico welcomes worshippers through carved wooden doors into a paved courtyard with a modest ablution area.
Inside, the prayer hall is generous and bright. A high coffered ceiling painted in sand and cream, modern pendant chandeliers, and long rows of deep red Turkish carpet lead the eye towards a mihrab of polished marble flanked by slender columns. A carved walnut mimbar stands beside it, bearing calligraphic panels in Thuluth. A screened women's section on a mezzanine allows sisters to join the Friday gathering in comfort.
The daily rhythm of five congregational prayers gives way to particular Friday warmth, and during Ramadan the mosque hosts long qiyam al layl services and communal iftars that knit together a busy Riyadh neighbourhood in quiet devotion.
