Hakkında
Rising within the rapidly expanding neighbourhoods of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, the Mosque of Sheikh Hamoud ibn Muhammad al Hamoud, may God have mercy upon him, commemorates a pious donor whose family has endowed houses of worship across the city in keeping with the Saudi tradition of private mosque waqf that has shaped the capital's religious landscape over the past generations. Riyadh itself has transformed in remarkable fashion from the small walled oasis town captured by King Abdulaziz in 1902 into a sprawling modern metropolis of more than seven million residents, its skyline rising with the Kingdom Tower, the al Faisaliah complex and the new King Abdullah Financial District. Saudi Muslim life is anchored by the rhythm of daily prayer around which schools, businesses and malls pause, and the city's neighbourhood mosques, of which this is one, carry that steady heartbeat into every quarter. Architecturally the building follows the refined Najdi modern style with a cream stone facade, geometric mashrabiya screens, a single slender minaret topped with a crescent, and a central dome finished in pale limestone. The interior prayer hall is floored in deep red carpet patterned with prayer niches aligned toward Makkah, the mihrab is faced with marble and framed by calligraphy in thuluth script. Daily prayers draw residents of the surrounding compounds and villas, while Jumu'ah fills the hall with a khutbah in Arabic. Ramadan brings nightly iftars of dates, gahwa and rice dishes provided by neighbourhood benefactors, long tarawih prayers led by huffaz, and intense laylat al Qadr observance. Eid mornings open with the takbirat echoing before the festive prayer. Visitors can combine a stop with the nearby Masmak fortress, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia and the historic Diriyah quarter recognised by UNESCO. Visitors can expect a warm Saudi welcome, with a dedicated reception area where dates, saffron coffee and small brass cups of Zamzam water are offered freely to newcomers after the prayers. The neighbouring small convenience shop, typical of Riyadh's residential quarters, stocks modest provisions so that worshippers can quickly purchase bottled water, prayer perfumes and copies of the noble Qur'an printed by the King Fahd Complex in Madinah. This integration of prayer hall, home and market typifies the rhythm of daily life across the sprawling modern Saudi capital.
