Hakkında
Dedicated to Lady Fatima al Zahra, may God be pleased with her, this Azerbaijani mosque in Yeni Gunesli district of Baku's Qaracukhur serves a community in the expanding suburbs of the South Caucasus capital. Baku has grown from a small oil drilling town into a metropolis of more than two million people spreading along the Caspian shore and into the surrounding countryside, with Yeni Gunesli representing one of the newer residential developments that have absorbed population from across Azerbaijan and beyond. The name Yeni Gunesli means New Sunshine, reflecting the optimism of modern urban expansion. Fatima al Zahra, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, holds a singular place of honour across the Muslim world as a model of piety, patient endurance, and devoted service. Azerbaijani mosques named in her honour draw on particularly deep veneration for the noble household of the Prophet that has characterised the region's religious culture for centuries. Azerbaijani mosque architecture blends Persian influenced iwan portals, tile work in turquoise and cobalt, slender minarets with muqarnas balconies, and specific regional traditions of carved stone and painted wooden decoration, all often set within walled courtyards. This Fatima Zahra mosque likely employs contemporary interpretations of these traditions suited to a modern suburban setting. Inside, carpeted prayer hall floors accommodate worshippers across dedicated men's and women's sections, with a mihrab decorated with traditional tile work or calligraphy, a wooden minbar, and Qur'anic inscriptions along the upper walls. Five daily prayers gather worshippers from the surrounding streets, and Jumu'ah fills the hall. Sermons in Azerbaijani incorporate Qur'anic passages recited in Arabic followed by reflection. Ramadan transforms the community with communal iftar featuring Azerbaijani dishes including plov, dushbara dumplings, kebabs, lavangi stuffed fish or chicken, and sweet baklava and shekerbura, alongside taraweeh prayers. Muharram commemorations draw particular attention with gatherings recalling the events at Karbala. Women worship in dedicated sections. Eid prayers gather extended families. Nearby attractions include the Baku Old City with its Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah Palace, the Flame Towers and Heydar Aliyev Centre, and the Caspian Sea promenade.
