Hakkında
In the village-like streets of Permatang Kuching on mainland Penang, Masjid Jamek Kariah Bagan Lebai Tahir bears a name that roots it in local memory — a kariah is a congregation and the name Lebai Tahir honours an early religious figure of the area. The mosque is a jamek, which in Malaysia means it is licensed to host the Friday prayer, and the weekly gathering has been the pulse of this community for decades. On ordinary days, the prayer hall sees small but faithful knots of worshippers — retirees who arrive before the adhan, taxi drivers who park outside for Zuhur, students passing through on their way home from school. The building itself is unassuming, typical of Malaysian kampung mosques, with a simple minaret, a wide porch for sandals and conversation, and ceiling fans that have swung through countless sermons. A separate women's section, a small library of Islamic books and mushafs, and a wudu area with rows of open-air taps complete the footprint. Ramadan is when the mosque overflows. Iftar is arranged by rota among the neighbouring households, with great pots of bubur lambuk and trays of kurma set out before Maghrib. Taraweeh stretches twenty rakaat, led by a local hafiz, and on the final ten nights qiyam-ul-layl gatherings keep the lights on deep into the quiet hours. Children are taught their first suras in the kelas mengaji that meets in the afternoons, and older students attend tajweed circles in the evenings. Funerals, nikah ceremonies, aqiqah gatherings, and the annual tahlil for departed kariah members all pass through this hall, weaving the lives of the neighbourhood into the fabric of its worship. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that the believer in the mosque is like a fish in water, and at Masjid Jamek Kariah Bagan Lebai Tahir that image rings true for those who consider these walls a second home. The old bilal who has called the adhan here for more than three decades still insists on walking rather than driving to the mosque, saying that the footsteps themselves are part of the hadith's promised reward and not to be skipped.
