Hakkında

Rooted in the rural agrarian rhythm of Patiya in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the Mozaher Para Khalifa Bari Jame Mosque draws its name from the Mozaher para hamlet, the title khalifa given to local religious teachers, and the bari suffix meaning homestead in Bengali. Chittagong, the port city on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh, has long been a gateway for Arab, Persian, and Turkic merchants whose presence from the medieval period onward shaped the religious landscape of the region, with shrines of early preachers such as Bayazid Bastami still venerated by local residents. Patiya, an upazila of Chittagong district, is dotted with rice fields, small streams, and dense clusters of homesteads, each with its own jame mosque serving families who often share kinship ties stretching back many generations. The mosque follows the characteristic Bangladeshi vernacular of plastered brick walls painted pale yellow or cream, a central dome crowned with a brass finial, four small corner domes, a short minaret fitted with loudspeakers, and a shaded veranda extending the capacity during Friday prayers. Inside, the prayer hall is covered with woven jute mats beneath donated carpets, the mihrab is finished in carved plaster bearing verses from Surah al Fatihah, and a carved wooden minbar stands beside it. Daily prayers gather farmers, rickshaw drivers, madrasah teachers, and elders, while Jumu'ah fills the hall and extends into the veranda. The khutbah is delivered in Bengali and Arabic, touching on ethics, family life, and charity. Ramadan is a warmly observed season, with nightly taraweeh, Qur'an completion ceremonies, and iftars of dates, halim, muri, fruit, and pakora shared among neighbours. Eid prayers spill into the surrounding lanes, with children receiving sweets and elders exchanging warm greetings. The mosque also hosts weddings, funerals, Qur'an memorisation classes for children, and occasional gatherings remembering the local khalifas whose teachings shaped the community. Respectful dress, quiet entry, and small donations towards maintenance remain the expected etiquette on arrival. An annual waaz mahfil gathering, a public lecture event popular across Bangladesh, is organised by the masjid committee during the cooler months, with visiting scholars from Chittagong, Dhaka, and Sylhet addressing topics of faith, family, and social welfare, while the committee also coordinates winter blanket distributions, free medical camps in cooperation with local clinics, and relief operations during the cyclone seasons that often affect the district.
