Hakkında
High in the mountain valleys of Tajikistan, the Central Jame Mosque of Faizobod District, known in Tajik as Masjidi jome'i markazii nohiyai Faizobod, gathers the faithful of the town of Obigarm and the surrounding villages for the five daily prayers beneath snow capped peaks of the western Pamir foothills. Faizobod district occupies a strip of rugged terrain east of Dushanbe along the Kofarnihon river, and has been part of the Muslim world since the eighth century, when Arab armies crossed the Oxus and the people of Transoxiana embraced Islam. The great scholars of Bukhara and Samarqand, whose libraries once rivalled any in the world, drew students from mountain communities like this one for more than a thousand years.
Obigarm itself, whose Persian name means Warm Water, is famous for its thermal springs used for centuries by mountain peoples for healing, and the town grew during the twentieth century as a modest spa resort. The central jame mosque serves as the principal congregational hall for Friday prayer in the district, and its name marks its function as the gathering place for all the smaller neighbourhood mosques of the surrounding villages.
Architecturally the prayer hall reflects the Central Asian tradition, with a square plan crowned by a central dome, a minaret topped by a small cupola, and walls finished in pale plaster with carved wooden doors and shuttered windows typical of the Pamiri vernacular. Inside, the carpets are red and patterned with floral medallions, the mihrab is faced with calligraphic inscriptions, and the ceiling bears stencilled motifs in blue and gold that recall the great mosques of Bukhara and Samarqand.
Friday prayers fill the hall with farmers, shepherds, teachers, and civil servants from the surrounding villages, and khutbahs are delivered in Tajik with verses from the Qur'an quoted in classical Arabic. Sermons dwell often on the character of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and on the endurance of his companions, may God be pleased with them, whose example speaks powerfully to mountain people accustomed to hardship. Travellers exploring the hot springs, the Nurek reservoir, or the high pastures of Rasht valley will find accurate daily prayer times and a warm welcome here for every visitor seeking a moment of devotion.
