Hakkında

Unilag Islamic Center in Makoko, on the fringes of the University of Lagos campus at Akoka, serves as a focal point for the university's Muslim community of students, faculty, and staff as well as the surrounding neighbourhood residents. The University of Lagos is one of Nigeria's oldest and most prestigious universities, founded in 1962 and home to tens of thousands of students across its faculties, with a significant Muslim population reflective of Nigeria's demographic balance between Islam and Christianity. The Islamic Center provides a venue where students can fulfil their daily prayer obligations between classes, engage with Muslim peers through organised societies and study circles, receive religious education, and build friendships rooted in shared faith during their formative university years. The centre functions as both a mosque and a multipurpose Muslim student facility, with a carpeted prayer hall oriented toward the qibla, mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, ablution facilities, meeting rooms, and administrative offices. Friday Jumuah draws a large congregation of students and staff, while daily prayers are attended by those whose schedules bring them into the vicinity. Programmes include Qur'an and tajwid classes for students wishing to improve their recitation, halaqa study circles on Islamic jurisprudence, tafsir, and seerah, guest lectures by visiting scholars from across Nigeria and the wider Muslim world, seminars on contemporary issues of Islamic concern, social events fostering fellowship among Muslim students, welfare initiatives, and mentorship for new converts exploring the faith. Ramadan at Unilag Islamic Center is a particularly rich time with nightly tarawih prayers often led by student huffaz, community iftars shared across the student body, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten nights. The Eid prayers gather students in celebratory attire for festive worship, forming memories that many carry throughout their lives. The Muslim Students Society chapter at Unilag works closely with the Islamic Center to organise programmes addressing the specific challenges of Muslim student life in a major university environment, including academic support, career mentorship, marriage introductions, and spiritual counselling, helping young Muslims navigate their formative years with both academic excellence and firm faith intact.
