Hakkında

The Muslim Prayer House of the Korkinsky District serves the small but resilient Muslim community of the Chelyabinsk oblast in the Southern Urals of Russia. Korkino is a mining town best known for its vast open pit coal mine, once among the largest of its kind in Eurasia, which has shaped the industrial landscape and working life of the district since the early twentieth century. The local Muslim population is drawn principally from Tatar and Bashkir families whose ancestors have lived across the Ural and Volga region for centuries, along with more recent arrivals from the Caucasus and Central Asia who came for work in the mines and the metallurgical plants of the Chelyabinsk basin. The prayer house itself is a modest building of brick and timber, its design more domestic than monumental in line with the Russian tradition of molitvenny dom, a term used for community prayer spaces smaller than a full muhallya mosque. A small wooden minaret rises at one end, and a tiled roof withstands the heavy snow of the long Ural winter that often arrives by early October. Inside, the prayer room is carpeted in pale green, with a simple mihrab niche framed in white plaster and Quranic calligraphy painted in gold. A separate curtained area serves the women of the community. Daily prayers are modest affairs given the small local population, while Jumu'ah gathers families from Korkino town, Rosa settlement, and neighbouring Yemanzhelinsk. Sermons are delivered in Tatar and Russian alternately, and they weave together Quranic teachings, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and practical guidance for life in a multi confessional town. Ramadan brings iftars of shurpa, chak chak, and fresh rye bread, with long tarawih that run late into the northern summer twilight. Eid prayers draw the whole community, and neighbours exchange visits afterward with sweet tea and pastries. Korkino itself lies a short drive south from Chelyabinsk city, with its opera house, Kirovka pedestrian street, the regional ethnography museum, the picturesque Lake Smolino on the city outskirts, and the chilling Chelyabinsk meteorite fragment preserved in the regional history museum downtown.
