ⵜⴰⵎⴻⵣⴳⵉⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵍ'ⴰⵎⵉⵔ ⵄⴻⴱⴷⴻⵍⵇⴰⴷⴻⵔ Mosque Alamyr Bd Alqadr

Raised above the streets of Khenchela, a mountain city in the Aures range of eastern Algeria, the Mosquee de l'Amir Abd al Qadir, whose name is inscribed in both Arabic calligraphy and Tifinagh script honouring the Amazigh heritage of the region, carries the beloved memory of the nineteenth century leader and scholar Amir Abd al Qadir al Jazairi. The Amir, born in 1808 near Mascara, led an extraordinary resistance against French colonial expansion for fifteen years after 1832, and during his long subsequent exile in Damascus became renowned as a spiritual master, a poet, and a celebrated defender of religious minorities, famously protecting thousands of Christians during the 1860 Damascus disturbances. His tomb rests today in Algiers, yet his name adorns mosques across the country and indeed across the wider Arab world.

Khenchela itself sits at the foot of the Aures mountains, at roughly 1200 metres above sea level, and the surrounding countryside of cedar forests, ancient Roman ruins, and Berber villages gives the region a distinctive atmosphere. The Aures was the heartland of the Amazigh queen al Kahina in the late seventh century and has remained proudly Berber in culture and language even as it has been thoroughly Muslim in faith for over thirteen hundred years.

Architecturally the prayer hall reflects modern Algerian construction blended with Maghribi and Andalusian motifs. A central dome crowned in green tile, four corner turrets, and a square based minaret in the North African tradition rise above smooth stone walls. Inside, a wide carpeted hall is supported by columns, the mihrab is framed by carved plaster muqarnas that echo Andalusian heritage, and calligraphic panels bear verses from the Qur'an and the names of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, along with those of his noble companions, may God be pleased with them.

Daily prayers gather farmers from the surrounding villages, teachers from the University of Khenchela, and traders from the local souq. Friday khutbahs are delivered in Arabic with occasional phrases in the Shawi Berber tongue, often dwelling on the patience and wisdom of Amir Abd al Qadir and on the steadfast faith of the early companions.
