Hakkında

Quietly marking the revival of visible Muslim worship in the mountains of Dagestan, Pervaya Mechet, the first mosque of Khadzhalmakhi built around the year 1950, stands as a witness to generations of Dargin villagers who preserved their faith through the hardest decades of the twentieth century. Dagestan is one of the most linguistically and ethnically diverse regions of the world, home to Avars, Dargins, Lezgins, Laks, and many other peoples whose ancestors accepted Islam gradually between the eighth and the fifteenth centuries. Khadzhalmakhi, sitting in the Levashinsky District, is a Dargin village built on a stony plateau, surrounded by orchards of apricot, apple, and walnut trees tended by families who descend from the same mountain lineages for many generations.

The construction of a mosque here in the middle of the twentieth century, at a time when religious expression was officially discouraged, testifies to the quiet courage of the village elders who preserved the call to prayer and the teaching of the Qur'an through years of difficulty. Older residents still recall how early lessons were held in private homes, how respected teachers memorised long passages of scripture in order to pass them on without written copies, and how the return of visible worship after the collapse of the Soviet system brought tears of joy to men and women who had waited half a lifetime for such a day. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that God does not lift knowledge by snatching it away, and the villagers held fast to that reassurance.

The building follows the practical mountain style typical of Dagestani villages. Thick stone walls retain the warmth of summer into the cool evenings, flat roofs made of layered clay and timber shelter the prayer hall, and a modest minaret carries the adhan across fields of grazing sheep and narrow mountain pastures. The congregation gathers for Fajr before the first light reaches the valley, for Jumu'ah with neighbours descending from higher hamlets, and for nightly tarawih prayers during Ramadan under the pale mountain moon.

Accurate prayer times for Khadzhalmakhi are provided on this page for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha, together with a location map and notes that guide travellers from Makhachkala, researchers of the Caucasus, pilgrims, and relatives from distant Dagestani villages to this historic small masjid so that each guest may share in the worship and the hospitality offered generously here.
