Hakkında

The Maqam of the Imam Musa al Kazim, peace be upon him, in Karbala preserves the memory of the seventh Imam of the prophetic household, the son of Jafar al Sadiq and a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. The main burial site of the Imam Musa al Kazim, peace be upon him, lies in Kadhimiya in Baghdad, but the holy city of Karbala, famous as the site of the martyrdom of Imam al Husayn, peace be upon him, also preserves a secondary maqam dedicated to his grandson the Imam al Kazim. Karbala itself is among the most visited cities of Iraq, drawing millions of pilgrims during the months of Muharram and Safar to walk between the shrines of al Husayn and his brother al Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, in a vast gathering known as the Arbaeen. The maqam under discussion is a smaller devotional space within the broader sacred geography of the city: a modest domed chamber with blue and gold tilework in the classic Iraqi shrine idiom, carved wooden doors inlaid with brass, mirror worked interior walls reflecting the soft lamplight, and a zarih of latticed silver enclosing the ceremonial tomb. Pilgrims enter quietly, remove their shoes at the threshold, and offer recitations of ziyarah, prayers for the household of the Prophet, and invocations of blessings upon them all. Daily prayers are held in an attached prayer hall, and the site is open to pilgrims throughout the year with extended hours during the Muharram and Safar commemorations. Local custodians and pilgrims alike recite the names of the Imams, upon them be peace, and extend greetings to the family of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and to his noble companions, may God be pleased with them. Close by stand the twin shrines of al Husayn and al Abbas with their gilded domes, the old souk of Karbala with its dates, tasbih beads, and turbah clay, the Al Mukhayyam camp of the martyrs, the river Alqamah crossing of devotion, and the Euphrates palm groves along the river's eastern bank.
