Hakkında
Dominating the seafront of Jizan on the south western corner of the Arabian Peninsula, the King Fahd Mosque in Jizan is one of the largest congregational buildings in the Tihama lowlands. Jizan itself has an old and distinctive Islamic heritage shaped by its position at the meeting point of the Red Sea, the high Asir mountains and the historic road to Yemen. Scholars from the region travelled for centuries between Zabid, Taiz and Mecca, and the coastal ports saw the arrival of African pilgrims crossing from Massawa and Assab on their way to perform hajj. The mosque named after King Fahd bin Abdulaziz continues that tradition of welcome, offering a spacious prayer centre capable of hosting thousands of local worshippers and travellers from every corner of the kingdom.
Built in the classical modern Arabian idiom, the mosque features a great central dome flanked by four graceful minarets that cast long shadows across the plaza at sunset. Its exterior is finished in a warm sandstone tone that softens the intense coastal glare, while the interior opens into a vast carpeted hall divided by slender marble columns. Stained glass clerestory windows of geometric design throw pools of sapphire and ruby light onto the qibla wall, and the mihrab is faced with pale Carrara marble carved with the names of God in thuluth script. An attached library houses Quranic manuscripts, tafsir collections and works on Tihama history.
Jizan's humid maritime climate makes the mosque's air conditioned interior a welcome refuge during the long summer, and its location beside the Corniche draws worshippers from the adjacent apartment districts, the fish market, the university campus and the nearby naval base. Friday sermons often touch on themes of family life, honest commerce and the responsibility of every believer toward travellers and the poor.
During Ramadan the forecourt is carpeted with long rows of mats and low tables laden with dates, laban, samosas and fragrant rice for the communal iftar organised by neighbourhood charitable committees. The mosque also hosts memorisation competitions for children, marriage celebrations for local families and Quran retreats during the last ten nights of Ramadan. Travellers arriving at Jizan airport or crossing the causeway from Farasan Island are encouraged to visit and share the quiet hour before maghrib, when the sea breeze cools the marble floor and the adhan climbs out over the reef toward the horizon.
