Hakkında

Perched on the slopes of Mount Carmel in the port city of Haifa, the Al Istiqlal Mosque is a landmark that carries a name meaning independence, a word that resonates deeply with the Palestinian community that built it and has maintained its worship through decades of change. Haifa is an ancient city, mentioned in medieval travel accounts and known for centuries as a meeting point of cultures beside the eastern Mediterranean. The mosque sits in the lower city, within walking distance of the old port and the historic market streets where Arabic, Hebrew and Russian can all be heard in the same afternoon. Architecturally the building reflects the Levantine style that shaped many mosques across Greater Syria during the late Ottoman and early twentieth century periods, with pale stone walls, arched windows, a slender minaret and a modest dome crowning the central prayer hall. The stone absorbs the sea light in a way that softens the building throughout the day, turning golden at sunset when the call to prayer rises towards the Bahai terraced gardens visible higher up the mountain. Inside, the floor is laid with rugs in muted reds and greens, the mihrab is carved with calligraphy pointing towards the Holy Mosque in Makkah, and the minbar is used each Friday for the khutbah delivered in Arabic. For the Arab community of Haifa, the mosque has been a gathering place across generations, serving worshippers whose families have lived in the city for many centuries as well as newer arrivals. Daily prayers bring a steady rhythm of older men in the front rows, students from nearby schools and workers from the port, while Fridays and the two Eid celebrations draw much larger crowds into the courtyard. Children attend afternoon Quran classes and learn to honour the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, along with the sayings of companions such as Umar ibn al Khattab, may God be pleased with him. Visitors, including non Muslim guests who approach respectfully, are often greeted with warmth and offered a quiet corner to observe or pray.
