Hakkında

Near the ancient Roman springs and the palm groves of Gabes in southern Tunisia's Qabis governorate, the Masjid of Abu Lubabah al Ansari honours one of the remarkable companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, a man of Madinah whose story of painful repentance, of tying himself to a pillar of the Prophet's mosque, may God be pleased with him, and of eventual forgiveness is cherished as an enduring example of sincere tawbah. Gabes is one of the most distinctive cities of the Tunisian south, its old oasis of date palms, pomegranates, henna, and olives nourished by freshwater springs that reach the sea, with a commercial and spiritual heritage tied to the seasonal markets and the Berber and Arab populations who have shaped its culture across centuries. The governorate of Qabis extends inland towards the Chott el Jerid and the Matmata highlands, and includes villages whose architecture preserves troglodyte and dry stone traditions alongside the coastal Arab Tunisian style. The mosque of Abu Lubabah al Ansari, may God be pleased with him, follows a modest southern Tunisian idiom, with thick whitewashed walls, a central square prayer hall under a shallow dome, a short square minaret, and a shaded courtyard with a marble fountain. Inside, the prayer hall is covered with Kairouani carpets, the mihrab is lined with carved plaster bearing verses from Surah al Tawbah, and a cedar minbar stands beside it. Daily prayers gather farmers, fishermen, shopkeepers, and students, and Jumu'ah draws a larger congregation, with the khutbah delivered in Arabic on themes of repentance, charity, and family life. Ramadan brings nightly taraweeh, communal iftars featuring brik, chorba, ojja, and dates, and Qur'an completion ceremonies. Eid prayers extend onto the surrounding lanes, where children receive sweets and elders exchange warm greetings. The masjid also hosts weddings, funerals, and occasional scholarly gatherings dedicated to the biographies of the companions of Madinah. Visitors should dress modestly, greet locals with the traditional assalamu alaykum, and approach the oasis and its mosque with the respect owed to a place of venerable memory.
