Hakkında
Set within the town of Frenda in Tiaret province of western Algeria, the mosque and Qur'anic school endowed by Haji Isa ibn al Sheikh honour a local benefactor whose waqf created a lasting institution for prayer, memorisation of the Qur'an and religious instruction across generations. Frenda occupies a plateau at the western edge of the Tiaret highlands, an area celebrated in the wider historical imagination for the nearby tombs of the Djeddars, mysterious pre Islamic mausolea, and for the proximity of the ruins of Tahart, the capital of the early Rustamid imamate which flourished in the eighth and ninth centuries as a major centre of scholarship and trans Saharan trade. The town itself retains a distinctly rural Algerian character, with stone and whitewashed houses clustered along streets overlooked by steep hills and cedar stands. The mosque presents a modest but dignified Maghrebi facade with a square minaret, horseshoe arches framing the courtyard, and an inner prayer hall paved with terracotta tiles and overlaid with woven straw mats. The attached school rooms are filled with desks, low bookcases holding mushafs, writing boards and pens for young students learning the alphabet and progressing through the Qur'an. Daily prayers bring shepherds, shopkeepers and civil servants, while Jumu'ah draws visitors from surrounding hamlets for khutbah in classical Arabic. Ramadan transforms the space with iftars of chorba, dates and tharid, tarawih prayers led by local reciters trained in the warsh reading and intensive Qur'anic circles for children. Eid prayers fill the adjoining street. Visitors exploring the Tiaret highlands will find the mosque a welcoming centre of rural devotion, close to the archaeological remains of Tahart, the Djeddar tombs and the high grasslands that define this corner of Algeria. The rhythms of memorisation in the classrooms, where young voices rise and fall reciting verses of al Baqara and al Nisa, create a gentle music that any visitor lingering near the courtyard will remember long after leaving Frenda. A shaded garden behind the mosque contains a row of ancient olive trees under which students review their lessons, and elders gather after Asr to drink green tea with mint and discuss the village's affairs. Through such daily rituals the memory of the founding benefactor Haji Isa ibn al Sheikh remains alive across the Tiaret plateau.
