Hakkında
Bearing the Kurdish dialectical name of its founder Haji Rahman Qadir Benaslaweyi, this mosque in Erbil honours a local pilgrim benefactor whose lineage connects to the village of Benaslawa on the plain outside the ancient citadel. Kurdish mosques frequently preserve the names of the hajjis whose charitable endowments made them possible, weaving family biography into the devotional landscape of every neighbourhood. Erbil itself claims to be among the longest continuously lived in cities on earth, with its great citadel mound rising above the centre of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and bearing archaeological layers reaching back more than seven thousand years. Its Islamic heritage begins with the seventh century opening of Mesopotamia and deepens through the Atabeg Muzaffar al Din Kokburi, may God have mercy upon him, who reigned in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and is credited with popularising the mawlid celebrations throughout the Muslim world. Scholars such as Ibn al Mustawfi and generations of Kurdish mullas maintained madrasas and dhikr circles across the city. The regional architectural tradition favours honey coloured stone, coursed brick, compact domes, square minarets with tiered balconies, and courtyards shaded by pomegranate and mulberry. Contemporary neighbourhood mosques such as this one echo these motifs while employing modern materials. Five daily prayers gather shopkeepers, teachers and civil servants, Friday prayers fill the carpeted hall and overflow onto the adjoining courtyard, the Friday sermon comes in Kurdish alongside Arabic citations, tarawih prayers through Ramadan light the evening streets with strings of lamps, and Eid mornings echo with the exchange of greetings in Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish. Qur'an schools meet in the late afternoon, and occasional Madah gatherings preserve the region's rich devotional poetry. Travellers exploring the citadel bazaar, the Qaysariya covered market or the Mudhafaria minaret will find in this Benaslaweyi mosque a gentle window onto Erbil's living religious fabric, shaped by its distinctive Kurdish inheritance and the broader Mesopotamian environment. Locally baked samoon bread arrives in baskets for Ramadan iftar, prepared by volunteering families whose generosity expresses the Kurdish principle that no neighbour should ever eat alone, and visiting travellers are invariably drawn into the warm courtyard gatherings each evening.
