Hakkında

Carrying the name of Shaykh Abdulhamid Shaykh Bazini in the Sorani Kurdish script, this mosque in Erbil commemorates a respected Kurdish religious teacher whose guidance and learning earned the honorific shaykh twice over, once through his own standing and once through his lineage. Kurdish communities across northern Iraq, Iran and Turkey frequently perpetuate the names of revered scholars in the mosques built by their students and descendants, maintaining an unbroken memory of the teaching chain that connects every generation to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Erbil stands among the oldest cities in the world, its towering citadel mound raising archaeological layers reaching back seven millennia, and its Islamic heritage is substantial. The city was a major centre under the Atabeg Muzaffar al Din Kokburi, may God have mercy upon him, whose patronage of scholarship and whose public celebration of the mawlid remain celebrated chapters in local memory. Kurdish scholars such as Mullah Ahmad Khani, Mullah Jaziri and Said Nursi, may God have mercy upon them, contributed profoundly to the intellectual and devotional life of the region. Regional architectural tradition favours honey coloured stone walls, coursed brick, compact central domes, square minarets with tiered balconies visible above the rooftops of traditional quarters, and courtyards planted with pomegranate and mulberry trees. Contemporary neighbourhood mosques incorporate these motifs in modern concrete and tile. Five daily prayers gather shopkeepers, teachers and office workers, Friday assemblies fill the carpeted hall and overflow into the courtyard, tarawih through Ramadan illuminates the streets with lanterns and the welcome smells of familiar dishes carried for iftar, and Eid mornings echo with greetings exchanged in Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish. Qur'an classes meet in the late afternoon. Travellers visiting the Qaysariya bazaar beneath the citadel, the Choli minaret of the thirteenth century or the Erbil civilization museum will find within the Shaykh Bazini mosque a gentle continuation of the old city's devotional rhythms. A traditional Kurdish wedding blessing is occasionally offered here before the civic ceremony, the imam reciting selected verses on marriage and family life while family members exchange dates, walnuts and sweet pastries prepared according to old Erbil culinary customs handed down.
