Hakkında
The Mosque of the Ağas, or in its classical Ottoman Turkish form Ağalar Camii, recalls the culture of patronage that once defined imperial Istanbul, in which senior palace officials known as Ağas vied to endow mosques, schools, fountains, and soup kitchens throughout the capital of the Ottoman realm. The Eminönü district, where this masjid stands, lies at the very heart of historic Istanbul in Turkey, along the southern shore of the Golden Horn at the foot of the old walled city. Eminönü has been the commercial and civic engine of Istanbul for centuries: the port through which goods from three continents entered the Ottoman capital, the setting for the Egyptian Bazaar and the New Mosque of the Valide Sultan, and the starting point for ferries crossing to Üsküdar and Kadıköy on the Anatolian side. Within this crowded and ancient landscape, the Mosque of the Ağas provides a welcome island of stillness for the visitor who steps off the bustling quaysides into its shaded courtyard. Its architecture is recognisably Ottoman: a single-domed prayer hall, a slender minaret, and an outer courtyard that once included an ablution fountain and a small garden. The interior, often recently restored, offers a careful balance of plastered white walls, restrained tilework, calligraphic roundels bearing sacred names, and a mihrab of carved stone or painted wood. Visitors find themselves entering a space shaped by centuries of sincere worship, where the footsteps of generations have worn the thresholds smooth and the wood of the minbar has darkened with the touch of many imams' hands. The five daily prayers continue to draw a steady congregation from the surrounding offices, shops, and ferry terminals; on Fridays the masjid's doors spill worshippers into the courtyard. Visitors are welcomed outside of prayer times and expected to observe the usual standards: modest dress covering shoulders and knees and, for women, hair; removal of footwear at the threshold; quiet conversation throughout. Seagulls wheeling above the Golden Horn provide a constant soundscape as worshippers arrive along the waterfront, adding a maritime character unique to Eminönü's historic mosques.
