Hakkında
Kamer Hatun Camii in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, is another of the city's historic mosques founded by a female patron, Kamer Hatun, whose name combines Kamer, the Arabic word for moon, with the Turkish honorific Hatun meaning lady. Foundations by women of the palace, aristocratic households, and prosperous merchant families contributed significantly to the religious infrastructure of Ottoman Istanbul, and the survival of such foundations into the present gives contemporary worshippers an opportunity to pray in buildings whose very existence reflects the piety of women whose names would otherwise have been forgotten. Kamer Hatun, whose identity beyond her name and pious bequest is difficult to establish with certainty, lives on as long as the adhan is called from the minaret of the mosque she founded. The building itself is of modest scale, typical of neighbourhood foundations of the Ottoman period: a square prayer hall beneath a single dome, a minaret rising from the corner, a courtyard with an ablution fountain, and an interior marked by plastered whiteness, calligraphic panels, a carved mihrab, and a wooden mimbar. Restoration across the centuries has preserved the essential character while adapting details to contemporary use. The Eminönü setting places the mosque in one of the most historically layered neighbourhoods of the old city, and its quiet presence among the busier commercial streets offers a welcome moment of stillness to the passing visitor. The daily congregation is drawn from the surrounding area, and Friday prayers fill the hall. Visitors curious about women's patronage in Ottoman religious history will find this mosque a particularly meaningful stop. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women, quiet conduct throughout, and photography carried out only outside of prayer are the expected courtesies. The imam is usually willing to answer brief questions about the mosque's founder and its history outside of the prayer and khutbah. The memory of Kamer Hatun lives on not only in the mosque's name but in the du'as quietly offered by worshippers who acknowledge the generations of women whose patronage shaped Istanbul's religious life.
