Hakkında
Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, commemorates the extraordinary figure of Kılıç Ali Pasha, an Italian-born convert to Islam who rose through the Ottoman navy to become Kapudan Pasha, the Grand Admiral, after conducting himself with distinction at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, where he saved a significant portion of the Ottoman fleet. The mosque, designed by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan toward the end of his remarkable career, is one of the finest late examples of Sinan's mature style, consciously modelled on the Hagia Sophia and demonstrating the master's confidence in synthesising Byzantine and Ottoman traditions in a single coherent architectural statement. The complex includes not only the mosque but a madrasa, a hamam, a fountain, and the tomb of Kılıç Ali Pasha himself, forming a complete külliye in the Tophane area near the Bosphorus where Ottoman naval activity centred. The interior of the mosque is remarkable for the spatial effect of its central dome and semi-domes, the restrained beauty of its Iznik-style tilework, the elegance of its mihrab and mimbar, and the carefully calibrated light from the upper windows. The congregation today includes residents of the surrounding streets, visitors to the Istanbul Modern museum across the road, and travellers exploring the Tophane area for its historical and contemporary cultural layers. Friday prayers fill the hall. The Diyanet's weekly sermon text shapes the khutbah delivered in Turkish. For visitors with an interest in Ottoman architecture, naval history, or the multicultural origins of the empire's elite, Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque ranks among the most rewarding stops in Istanbul. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women, quiet conduct, and photography carried out only outside of active prayer are the essential courtesies expected of any visitor to this remarkable sixteenth-century foundation. Kılıç Ali Pasha's own tomb within the complex draws visitors who wish to offer a brief fatiha for the soul of this remarkable convert and admiral whose life bridged Mediterranean worlds.
