Hakkında

Hagia Sophia in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the most storied buildings in the entire history of world architecture and religion, and since its reclassification to mosque status in 2020 it has resumed its Islamic liturgical function after decades as a museum. Built originally in the sixth century as the great cathedral church of Eastern Christendom under the Byzantine emperor Justinian, the building became a mosque in 1453 following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmed II Fatih, serving for nearly five centuries as the principal mosque of the Ottoman capital and inspiring the subsequent development of Ottoman imperial mosque architecture from the Süleymaniye to the Sultanahmet. The vast dome, with its apparent weightlessness and its cascade of subsidiary half-domes, remains one of the supreme achievements of human construction. The interior now functions as a place of Muslim prayer, with carpets covering the floor, a mihrab indicating the direction of Makkah slightly off the original axis to correct for the building's north-east orientation, a mimbar from which the Friday khutbah is delivered, and the great Ottoman calligraphic roundels of the second half of the nineteenth century bearing the names of Allah, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, and the rightly guided caliphs. Preserved Byzantine mosaics in the upper galleries remain visible and receive the respect owed to them as elements of the building's layered history. Daily prayers and Friday congregations now gather here, with visitors from across the Muslim world and from every religious background coming to witness the building's unique testimony to the continuity of sacred purpose across more than fourteen centuries. Visitors should observe modest dress, remove shoes at designated areas, and enter quietly; separate arrangements are typically in place for tourists and for worshippers. Photography during active prayer is not permitted, and voices must remain low throughout the experience inside the mosque. Entry arrangements for visitors and worshippers are managed separately during busy periods, and arriving early in the morning or closer to late afternoon tends to afford a calmer visit than midday.
