Hakkında
Firuz Ağa Mosque in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, is one of the earliest post-conquest Ottoman mosques in the historic peninsula, dating from the late fifteenth century under the patronage of Firuz Ağa, chief treasurer of Sultan Bayezid II. As one of the early foundations of the Ottoman capital, the mosque preserves architectural features that illustrate the transition from the earlier, more regionally distinctive pre-conquest styles to the developing classical Ottoman synthesis. The building is compact and elegant, with a single dome resting on a cubical prayer hall, a slender minaret rising from one corner, and an open forecourt that once included an ablution fountain. The location, near the Hagia Sophia and the Sultanahmet Square, places the mosque at the very heart of Ottoman Istanbul's historic core, where the imperial institutions of the state, the great mosques, and the palace compounds once defined the life of the capital. Despite its proximity to some of the most heavily visited tourist sites in the city, Firuz Ağa Mosque retains a quieter congregation and a genuine neighbourhood character, serving residents, shopkeepers, students, and civil servants who work in the surrounding buildings. The interior preserves many classical Ottoman features: a carved mihrab, a wooden mimbar, calligraphic panels with sacred names, and a carpeted hall arranged in neat rows. The Friday khutbah follows the Diyanet's weekly text in Turkish. Visitors with an interest in the early Ottoman period will find this mosque a particularly worthwhile stop, since its compact scale and preserved features make the developmental line of classical Ottoman architecture unusually legible. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women entering the prayer hall, quiet conduct throughout, and photography carried out only outside of prayer are the ordinary courtesies expected of any visitor to the mosque. A quiet moment after prayer rewards attentive observation. The mosque's position near the Topkapi Palace outer walls adds a particular historical resonance, as courtiers and palace servants would have passed through its doors in the earliest years of Ottoman rule in the city.
