Hakkında
Akbıyık Camii in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, is a classical Ottoman mosque of the fifteenth century, associated with Akbıyık Muhyiddin Efendi, a saintly figure of the period immediately following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Sheikh Akbıyık, whose epithet means white-moustached, was revered as a Sufi shaykh of the Khalwati order and a spiritual guide to the early Ottoman population of the newly conquered city. His tomb and the mosque bearing his name have long been a site of quiet veneration, with worshippers drawn both by the mosque's function as a place of daily prayer and by the memory of the shaykh whose baraka, by the grace of Allah, is believed by many to pervade the building. Located in the Sultanahmet area near the southern slopes descending toward the Sea of Marmara, the masjid sits within walking distance of the historic core of Ottoman Istanbul, yet it remains off the main tourist circuit and retains a local character. Architecturally the building is modest in scale but refined in detail, with a single dome, a short minaret, and an interior preserving the classical Ottoman elements of a carved mihrab, wooden mimbar, calligraphic panels, and carpeted prayer hall. The congregation today includes long-time residents, students from nearby schools and madrasas, and occasional pilgrims who come specifically to pay respects near the shaykh's resting place. Friday prayers fill the hall. Visitors interested in Istanbul's Sufi heritage will find this masjid a quietly important stop, one that connects the early Ottoman period with the living continuity of prayer. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women, quiet behaviour throughout, and respectful conduct near the tomb and the prayer area are the essential courtesies. Photography should be carried out discreetly and avoided during active prayer. The atmosphere often rewards a few minutes of sitting in reflection in the back rows of the hall. Thursday night gatherings for recitation in memory of Sheikh Akbıyık continue in a gentle adapted form, drawing worshippers who value the Sufi heritage of the mosque alongside its daily function.
