Hakkında

Situated in the Belle Rive neighbourhood of north Edmonton in the province of Alberta, the Ismaili Community Centre and Jamatkhana serves the flourishing Shia Ismaili community of the Canadian prairies, offering a place of prayer, study, and community service within an institutional network guided by the global spiritual leadership of the Aga Khan. Edmonton's Ismaili community traces its roots to immigrants who arrived from east Africa, south Asia, central Asia, and the Middle East, many of whom settled in Alberta from the 1970s onward and built institutions of remarkable warmth and civic engagement. The Jamatkhana functions not simply as a place of worship but as a broader centre for youth programmes, health and family services, religious education, volunteer work, and intergenerational gatherings that sustain a shared cultural and spiritual life. Architecturally the building reflects the contemporary Ismaili aesthetic, featuring a clean limestone and glass exterior that harmonises with the Alberta prairie landscape, an interior prayer hall illuminated by natural light through clerestory windows, restrained calligraphic ornament invoking Quranic verses, and a welcoming entrance hall framed by geometric screens inspired by classical Fatimid and Persian art. Daily prayers follow the community's distinctive schedule with particular emphasis on Dua prayer gatherings in the early morning and evening, with the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, revered throughout. Religious education classes for children and youth, guided by trained volunteer teachers, instil the community's ethic of service, pluralism, and universal brotherhood. Ramadan and Eid gatherings feature nightly programmes with a richness of Indian, Pakistani, Afghan, Tajik, and east African culinary offerings that reflect the community's global reach. Volunteers maintain the Jamatkhana with dedicated service, embodying the values of the community. Visitors are welcomed respectfully. Belle Rive itself offers proximity to the North Saskatchewan River valley trails, the West Edmonton Mall, and the Royal Alberta Museum, all easily reachable from this thriving suburban neighbourhood nearby. The Jamatkhana hosts regular lectures on Ismaili philosophy, history, and the pluralist vision of the Aga Khan Development Network, and volunteers organise interfaith dialogues inviting neighbours of all faiths. Youth leadership programmes nurture the next generation of engaged Canadian citizens committed to service and ethical living. Charitable drives support Edmonton homeless shelters and refugee resettlement programmes, reflecting the community's commitment to universal brotherhood. The Aga Khan Council for Canada coordinates national programmes connecting the Belle Rive centre with Ismaili communities across Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal in shared service, learning, and devotion throughout the Canadian jamat network.
