Hakkında

Masjid As-Sabirin, located in Drogenbos on the southern edge of Brussels, carries a name rooted in one of the most recurrent themes of the Qur'an: as-sabirin, "the patient ones", those whom Allah promises tremendous reward for their steadfastness in faith and trials. That theological resonance gives the mosque a particular identity, and sermons as well as community activities often return to the virtues of patience, perseverance and trust in God. Drogenbos is a small Flemish commune attached to the Brussels conurbation, with a growing Muslim population that has made the establishment of a local mosque an important community achievement. As a mosque, Masjid As-Sabirin holds the five daily prayers, Friday congregations with khutbahs typically delivered in Arabic and French with Dutch summaries, and the complete schedule of Islamic observances including the two Eids, Mawlid, Ashura, Laylat al-Qadr and commemorations of key Prophetic moments. The prayer hall is carefully laid out with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a visible mihrab and a minbar for the weekly sermon, while separate rooms serve women's prayer and children's classes. Qur'anic education for children is structured around weekly lessons in tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies, with teachers drawn from the community. Adult programmes include tafsir circles, seerah discussions, fiqh lectures and Q&A sessions where congregants can raise practical questions about daily life. Ramadan transforms the mosque into a hub of communal life, with taraweeh prayers, iftars shared by volunteers and particular attention to the final ten nights. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals follow Islamic custom and are coordinated through the mosque's administrative support. Relationships with Drogenbos municipal authorities, neighbouring non-Muslim residents and other faith communities are maintained through open days, information sessions and interfaith meetings. Charitable activity, including zakat collection and support for families in need, reflects the mosque's emphasis on patience expressed through action. For congregants, Masjid As-Sabirin is a daily reminder that patience is not passivity, but a disciplined, hopeful engagement with life and faith. A notable characteristic of Masjid As-Sabirin is the attention given to supporting families during bereavement, with a small group of volunteers trained to help relatives with the specific Islamic rites of washing, shrouding and burial arrangements in the Belgian context.
