Hakkında
High on the southeastern Anatolian plateau, the ancient town of Derik in Mardin province keeps alive one of the most painful recent chapters in Turkish civic memory, and its mosque bears the name of Muhammet Fatih Safiturk, the young district governor who was killed in an attack in two thousand and sixteen while serving the local community. The honorific Sehit, meaning martyr, reflects the common Turkish practice of honouring fallen public servants whose memory is preserved through mosques, schools and libraries across Anatolia. Mardin itself is one of the Near East's great historic cities, a warren of honey coloured limestone houses cascading down a steep ridge overlooking the Mesopotamian plain, with Syriac, Armenian, Arab and Turkish communities layered into its streets across more than two thousand years of continuous habitation. Derik lies west of Mardin city, amid vineyards and olive groves, and the mosque serves farming families and small town residents alike. Architecturally the building follows a contemporary Turkish provincial model, with a single central dome, a pencil minaret rising sharply above the limestone walls and a paved forecourt framed by small cypress trees. The mihrab is carved from local stone, the mimbar features geometric panels and the carpet is woven in deep green marked with pale medallions. Five daily prayers are observed under the call of a resident muezzin, Jumu'ah is delivered in Turkish with Arabic Qur'anic recitation, and the khutbah often touches on responsibility, service and the sanctity of the martyr's path. Ramadan brings iftar under long canopies with lentil soup, olives, cheese and fresh pide, while Eid prayers fill the forecourt at dawn. Visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes at the threshold and pause by the memorial plaque honouring the young official whose name the building bears. Nearby lie the old medresas of Mardin, the Deyrulzafaran Syriac monastery, the ancient city of Dara with its rock cut tombs and the carved stone minaret of Kasimiye. The mosque weaves mourning and daily prayer with gentle provincial rhythm. The mosque's young imam, a local hafiz trained at the Mardin imam hatip school, often leads youth halaqas after the evening prayer, teaching adab and tajwid to village children who hope one day to recite the Qur'an from memory during the blessed month of Ramadan across the hills of Derik and its stone terraces.
