Hakkında

Gracing a busy neighbourhood of the great port city of Chittagong in southeastern Bangladesh, the Alhaj Jakir Hosaain Contractor Jame Masjid bears the name of a respected local contractor Alhaj Jakir Hosaain, whose pious endowment ensured that the surrounding families would have a generous place of prayer, Quran instruction, and community gathering. Chittagong itself, known locally as Chattogram, is Bangladesh's principal port and second largest city, its shipyards, customs wharves, and container terminals forming the economic spine of the nation, while its surrounding hills and sea coast give it a spectacular natural setting. The city has been an Islamic cultural crossroads for centuries, welcoming Arab, Persian, Turkish, and Malay traders whose merchant fleets plied the Bay of Bengal and whose scholars enriched the local madrasa tradition. Distinguished saints and teachers rest in its hinterland, including the celebrated shrine of Shah Amanat in the city centre, whose memory remains vivid for millions. Architecturally the masjid reflects the traditional Bengali idiom blended with modern expansion, featuring a rendered facade, multiple small domes over the main prayer hall, slender corner minarets, and terracotta floral motifs around the mihrab niches. Inside, ceiling fans circulate the humid coastal air, and the carpets are deep green patterned with repeating mihrab arches. Daily prayers gather port labourers, rickshaw pullers, shopkeepers, garment factory workers, and teachers from the nearby madrasas. The Friday khutbah is delivered in Bengali with Arabic citations, invoking the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and treating themes of gratitude for honest livelihood, patience under trial, and the blessing of continuing learning. Ramadan brings iftars of haleem, beef bhuna, jilapi, muri, and chola bhaji, with sweet lassi. The two Eids fill the street outside with festive crowds. Travellers can combine their visit with the Shah Amanat shrine, Foy's Lake, the old colonial hill quarter, and the Patenga beach along the Bay of Bengal. An attached madrasah teaches children Quranic memorisation, Arabic grammar, and classical Islamic etiquette in the Bengali tradition. Weekly tafsir circles draw elders from across Chittagong, and women's halaqah sessions meet in a shaded side hall for lessons on household fiqh. Charitable programmes during Ramadan and winter provide rice, lentils, warm blankets, and medical supplies to widows, orphans, and labourers of the port district. The imam visits the sick at the Chittagong general hospital regularly, continuing the deep pastoral tradition cherished by the Bangladeshi Muslim community throughout this historic Bay of Bengal port city and its hinterland today.
