Hakkında

Linked to the Nizkunjara Alim Madrasa in Chhagalnaiya, this jame mosque provides the principal Friday assembly for both the students of the madrasa and the surrounding villagers. The term alim designates a level of Bangladeshi Islamic schooling roughly equivalent to higher secondary education, preparing students for the fazil and kamil stages equivalent to bachelor's and master's degrees in Islamic disciplines. The pairing of a madrasa with a mosque reflects a teaching philosophy embedded in Muslim education since the earliest centuries, when the masjid itself was the classroom and the imam was the teacher. Chhagalnaiya is a small upazila of Feni district in the greater Chittagong division, a region of paddy fields, betel nut groves, and slow flowing rivers that feed the Meghna estuary. Bangladesh's Islamic heritage is deeply rooted, shaped by the saintly preachers of the Delta such as Hazrat Shah Jalal of Sylhet and Bayezid Bostami, may God have mercy upon them, by the scholars of Sonargaon and Dhaka, and by the robust madrasa network that emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The regional architectural tradition favours whitewashed walls, onion domes flanked by tall corner turrets, pointed arches, wide verandahs against the monsoon, and spacious courtyards to accommodate large gatherings. Five daily prayers bring students and villagers together at dawn and dusk, Friday gatherings fill the entire hall with farmers arriving from nearby hamlets, tarawih prayers through Ramadan illuminate the courtyard with strings of lights, and Eid prayers spill onto the paddy embankments under the bright morning sky. The madrasa itself offers daily classes in Qur'an, hadith, fiqh, Arabic, Bangla and general subjects, and the mosque hosts occasional public lectures during the annual jalsa season. Travellers journeying from Feni town toward the ruined Shamsher Gazi fortifications or the coastal road south to Mirsharai will find Nizkunjara an unhurried example of Bangladeshi rural Muslim learning alongside daily community worship. Harvest season brings particular bustle as farmers arrive with sacks of paddy, betel nuts and vegetables designated for zakat, which are weighed in the mosque courtyard and distributed to the poor before another season of planting begins across the surrounding villages.
