Hakkında
Above a row of small shops in Benetusser, a working class town in the metropolitan belt of Valencia, the Associació Cultural Islàmica Al Andalus has transformed a rented hall into a modest masjid and community centre that carries within its very name a deep historical resonance. The reference to Al Andalus recalls the eight centuries of Muslim civilisation on the Iberian peninsula, a civilisation that produced the Great Mosque of Cordoba, the Alhambra, scholars such as Ibn Rushd and Ibn Arabi, and the agricultural, mathematical, and philosophical inheritance that passed through Spain into the wider European world. Benetusser itself sits in the fertile huerta of Valencia, land reshaped by the irrigation channels introduced during the Andalusi period, and local Muslims see themselves as quiet heirs of that agricultural genius. The association's premises are simple but carefully maintained, with a ground floor prayer hall divided by a low partition between men's and women's sections, donated carpets of deep blue, a Qur'an cupboard, and hand painted calligraphy from a local Moroccan artist. Daily prayers draw a small but steady congregation of Moroccan, Algerian, Senegalese, and Pakistani neighbours, along with a handful of Spanish reverts. Jumu'ah is attended by a larger gathering, with the khutbah delivered in Arabic and Spanish. Ramadan brings communal iftars featuring harira, chorba, dates, and Valencian pastries, and taraweeh prayers run well into the night. The association also organises Arabic and Qur'an classes for children raised in Valencian and Castilian speaking homes, charitable collections for families in need, and occasional historical tours exploring surviving traces of Andalusi heritage across the region. Eid festivals include storytelling for children about the civilisation whose name the masjid carries. Visitors interested in the cultural continuities between the old and new Al Andalus are warmly received, provided modest attire and respectful conduct are observed throughout the building. Summer gatherings are sometimes held in a local park where children learn Arabic calligraphy, elders recount stories of grandparents who left Morocco and Algeria decades ago, and volunteers distribute leaflets translated into Valencian, Castilian, and Arabic explaining the fundamentals of Islamic belief to curious passersby. The association also maintains a small exhibition of historic photographs and replica manuscripts tracing the heritage of Al Andalus.
