Hakkında

Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Camii in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul, Turkey, honours Khoja Ahmad Yasawi, the great twelfth-century Turkic Sufi shaykh of Central Asia whose teachings and poetry in Turkic vernacular languages shaped the Islamic heritage of generations of Turks from the steppes of Central Asia to the heart of Anatolia and beyond. Yasawi's influence on the spread of Islam among Turkic peoples was immense, and his khanqah in modern Kazakhstan, encased in the monumental mausoleum built by Timur at the end of the fourteenth century, remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Turkic Muslim world. Naming a contemporary Istanbul mosque Hoca Ahmet Yesevi connects the local community to this pan-Turkic Sufi heritage and reminds worshippers that Turkish Islamic identity has roots reaching eastward across Asia as much as westward into the Balkans. Başakşehir, on the western edge of the European-side metropolitan area, is one of the newer planned districts of Istanbul, with modern residential developments and an expanding population. Architecturally the masjid adopts contemporary Turkish mosque conventions with classical Ottoman silhouettes realised in modern materials: a dome and minaret of traditional profile, a generous carpeted prayer hall oriented toward Makkah, a mihrab and mimbar of traditional craftsmanship, wudu facilities, a women's section, and calligraphic decoration. The Friday khutbah follows the Diyanet's weekly national text in Turkish. The congregation reflects the mixed social fabric of the planned district. Ramadan brings iftars and taraweeh prayers that animate the masjid into the night. Visitors passing through Başakşehir can include a brief stop here at prayer time, observing the standard courtesies: modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women, quiet conduct throughout, and photography carried out only outside of active prayer. A moment of reflection on Yasawi's Central Asian heritage is especially appropriate in this mosque. Central Asian Turkic heritage is commemorated throughout the wider district with various street and institution names, reflecting the consciousness of the broader Turkic Muslim world that the mosque's naming helps to maintain.
