In the orchard belt north of the historic city of Valencia, the Centro Cultural Islamico de Valencia serves a diverse Muslim community whose presence in the region reflects both the ancient Andalusi past and the newer migrations of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. Valencia itself was once the proud Muslim city of Balansiya, founded according to classical sources by the Umayyad governors in the eighth century and flourishing under successive Andalusi dynasties until its final conquest by James I of Aragon in 1238. During those five centuries it produced poets, scholars, and agricultural innovators whose legacy still shapes the landscape, including the intricate irrigation systems of the huerta that continue to water the orange groves and ricefields to this day.
Alboraya, a small town on the coastal plain just north of Valencia, is famed throughout Spain for its chufa, the tiger nut used to make the beloved drink horchata. The surrounding farmland is stitched by canals and acequias that trace their origins to the Muslim Andalusi period, and many words in the local Valencian dialect, from aljibe for cistern to alquitran for tar, retain their Arabic roots. In this landscape of deep historical memory, contemporary Muslim families from Morocco, Senegal, Pakistan, and elsewhere have built new community life, and this cultural centre is one of the places where that life takes visible form.
The building combines a prayer hall for the five daily prayers and Jumu'ah with rooms for Arabic classes, meetings, women's circles, youth activities, and cultural events that introduce the wider Spanish public to Islamic heritage. The imam's khutbah is usually delivered in Arabic with summaries in Spanish, and during Ramadan the centre organises communal iftars that bring together people of many nationalities in the beautiful custom of sharing dates and water at sunset. Prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, are recited together, echoing the devotion of the old Andalusi poets.
Visitors will find on this page accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Centro Cultural Islamico de Valencia, along with its address in Alboraya, a location map, and notes that assist residents of the Valencian huerta, students at the city's universities, tourists visiting the old medina of Balansiya, and Andalusi history enthusiasts to attend congregational worship here and engage with a living community that honours both its classical roots and its modern Spanish home.
