Hakkında

Al Ula, the breathtaking oasis city of northwestern Arabia whose sandstone cliffs guard the Nabataean tombs of Hegra, carries an Islamic memory older than most of the Peninsula's named towns, for the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, passed through its valley on the campaign of Tabuk and supplicated for its people. Within the modern town, this mosque honours Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib, may God be pleased with him, paternal uncle of the Prophet and the lion of Islam whose martyrdom at Uhud deeply grieved the Messenger and whose memory anchors countless mosques across the Muslim world. Hamza's conversion, recounted in the sirah of Ibn Ishaq, came as he heard of insult offered to the Prophet by Abu Jahl, and his subsequent defence of the early community at Badr established his legacy among the foremost companions. Architecturally the Al Ula mosque follows a contemporary Saudi provincial model, with pale sandstone cladding drawn from local quarries, a low central dome, a slender minaret and a courtyard shaded by date palms. Inside, the mihrab is lined with cream marble, the mimbar rises in three carved steps and the carpet is laid in deep green with gold medallions. The main hall accommodates several hundred worshippers, with a separate women's section opening from the eastern side. Daily prayers follow the calendar issued by the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, Jumu'ah is delivered in classical Arabic and Ramadan evenings bring tarawih led by huffaz who often travel from Medina for the month. Eid mornings fill the forecourt with families in freshly pressed thobes. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on the angled racks and respect the dignified silence that falls between the takbirat. Landmarks within short driving distance include the Nabataean tombs of Hegra, the rock art of Jabal Ikmah, the old town of Al Ula with its mudbrick lanes and the Elephant Rock formation. The mosque offers a gentle welcome into the prophetic geography threading through this valley's living history. A small interpretative panel near the entrance, written in Arabic and English, retells the story of Hamza's conversion and martyrdom at Uhud, reminding visitors that the Muslim community's earliest chapters were written in both joy and tears along the same ancient caravan routes that pass this modern Al Ula neighbourhood today.
